Rest Values and Names Lesson

Below are some rests young musicians should recognize. Rests tell us when to be silent and for how long we should remain silent in a song. They are often used at the end of a phrase or section of music.

This is a whole rest.
It looks like a hole in the ground.
It always hangs from the 4th line of the staff.
Hold it for 4 counts.

whole rest

This is a half rest.

It looks like a hat.
It always sits on the third line of the staff.
Hold it for 2 counts.

half rest

This is a quarter rest.
It looks a jagged three (3).
Hold it for 1 count.

(some of my students
think of this equation to
help them remember: 4-1= 3)

quarter rest

This is an eighth rest.
It looks like a seven.
Hold it for 1/2 count.

(some of my students
think of this equation to
help them remember: 8-1= 7)

eighth rest

This is one sixteenth rest.
It looks like an eighth rest with a second flag.
Hold it for 1/4 count.
